Temporary Closures & Fulton Street update

Like many in the 'hood, I have gotten very used to my 'best in the city' cappuccino at Cafe Organica (Grove @ Central). Just went by this morning to find out that they are closed indefinitely for remodeling. There is a notice posted in the window and on their web site promising bigger and better things very soon. Congrats to Eton for his 3rd place finish in some huge barista competition, too!

Also, Poleng Lounge (formerly 1751 Social Club) is closed for remodeling until May 2006 (as I found out from a sign posted in the window).

On a brighter note, when eating at Papalote in the Mission last week, the girl at the counter opined that the Fulton Street location would be open this week (the week of March 13th).

I also spoke to the owner of the Fulton Street Bar side of the block, who tells me that Gabin is just a new name, same owners. In regards to the Fulton St. Bar, it looks like they are about 7 months away from having a shell to offer a potential renter.

So, that's good news, no?

By May we should have LOTS of great spots to patronize...

What a fine location for the next NOPNA meeting.

Unfortunatley, Cafe Organica is moving their coffee shop to the Financial District. The NOPA location is only going to be for their barrista training.

I AM IN MOURNING. No other coffee in this hood compared.

BTW... Ty (or anyone else)... does anyone have a report from these Divisadero corridor planning meetings that have been going one the last few weeks????

maybe we should start a weekly neighborhood babies playgroup at Gabin... just imagine showing up with half a dozen strollers, diaper bags and baby food for an hour of cooing and babbling ... :)

i guess it's good news that something might someday occupy that space... but a real bummer that Daebul/Gabin will live on as is. who could possibly want to lease that blue building if they learned the owners forced them out of business with rent hikes. i personally have numerous business ventures i'd like to pursue in that space, but won't touch it.

I got an email from Eton @ Organica and although they are opening a new 'location to be determined' space elsewhere, and using the Grove/Central location for training, they will reopen @ Grove/Central later this year.

I asked him if he just wasn't doing enough business to justify the space, but got no reply...

And I don't care what anyone says, Ritual and Blue Bottle can't touch Organica's cappuccino.

It's a bit unfair of him to get us all hooked then pull up stakes... Maybe he'll treat it like a beauty school and let his students practice on the addicted neighborhood folks like myself while they train... :-)

Papalote is open!

They don't seem quite settled in yet--hopefully the drink offerings will be expanded and the menu will be posted somewhere--but service is friendly, and my burrito was among the best I've had in the City.

Strange story. It seems like the Co-owner of Organica (Eton's wife) had a paranoid (psychotic?) break after they placed third with some mildly fishy scores from a judge from Ritual cafe (2nd).

Basically, she acussed all of the employees, many of the regulars and the employees of central of all being spies/workers for ritual or a big cafe on the east coast, murky. They are all fired and awaiting back wages. The plan as of the previous night from their mouths was to keep the shop open durring the opening of the new one.

I have no idea what is happening now.

Woah, damn. I'm not sure what to say about that..

Walking down Divis today, I noticed a few new things:
Ziryab is open
Nopa is looking extremely cool
A new pizza by the slice place, Amina's, has shown up with little fanfare
And something called "Mojo Bicycle Cafe" is applying for a beer & wine license. Is it a bike shop with beer? A cafe for bikers? Either way, it sounds awesome.

Mojo will be a cafe and a full bike shop. I'm sorry to hear that Cafe Organica is gone, but I'm going to try my hardest to put out the best cappuccino I can.
