They need them. The cops that break up the loitering on Grove between Broderick and Baker never do anything. It's like they are friends with the kids. Parents come out to 'shoo' the cops away when they question their kids who are underage drinking and smoking pot on the sidewalk almost every night. Also, they apparently need help at the dispatch call center as well. I was just trying to call the Police dispatch line tonight and waited on the line until their system freaked out and disconnected me three times in a row. I wanted to tell them about the two latino kids, one with a bike, who were walking down the street slamming their bike up against cars and telling me from across the street that I was afraid of them 'Whitey'. It seriously seems that if the cops were to circle the neighborhood and question every other person in the past month, they would fill up the cells pretty quickly every night. IT'S GETTING SHADY AROUND HERE!

I agree. There is a police presence in our neighborhood, but it never seems to be enough. It's unnerving to look out our window and see a huge pack of people (mostly young men) clogging up the corner of Grove/Lyon with their cars and loitering in the middle of the street. Speaking of the cars -- is there some way to help put a stop to the screaming fast drivers down our street? Our kids are in serious danger because some people find it fun to peel out and race down the block (and through stop signs, I might add). More cops would help reduce this problem, but perhaps we need to post signs reminding them that there are kids to look out for (we're a block from the school, for goodness sake!). Any ideas? Sorry for the tangent -- it's just been gnawing at me a lot lately...

Good comments. I will ask our neighborhood safety liaison to talk to the police about the cars peeling out down the streets. If you can get a license plate, that always helps and then report it to the police.

to slow traffic, check new post:

A lot of people ask about how we can slow drivers down around here. Well, you can try working with the City...

Speed bumps in the middle of the block do the job nicely to slow the speeders down.
