crime and stuff

I am quite annoyed to report that my own house got broken into this last week. They took a batch of stuff, though not as much as they could have. I shouldn't complain, I'm a lucky guy...
but it was the sentimental stuff that angers me the most. The jewlery that was my mothers that my wife now had... some small things my father had given me before he passed away... and, strangely, the top three small drawers from the antique dresser. So now we have these holes staring at us.

of course, these last two weeks there's been a guy living in a van outside our house, and another lady who seems to spend all day, every day in the doorway across the street... why is it that stuff like this just goes on in this town, and we never really figure out how to solve it? They weren't really bothering me until this whole thing happened, and now I notice how sort of 'vulnerable' our house is, with people watching us come and go all day and night.

so, if you see any small wooden drawers laying around the neighborhood, let me know.

I am sorry to hear about the burglary Tys. How did they get in? Do you have advice as to how neighbors can prevent such crimes from happening to ourselves?

Not really. Lock stuff up, be mindful of who's around... unfortunately, if folks want to get in, they probably can. But they'll look for the easiest route, so make it a bit harder at your place.

Best piece of advice (assuming you have insurance) take a video camera around and do a documentary of all your stuff. it could be fun, and years from now if nothing bad happens, your kids will love it.
keep the tape in a safe deposit box, or trade it with a neighbor or friend (in a different part of town)

my car (2200 block Turk) was broken into twice in last month. Made police report, but no response or apparent action from PD. Car break-ins seem to have proliferated in last 6 months. broken window glass a common sight in nopn.
